What are good brands to stick to in the UK? I am a teacher and need to get some good trousers for work. I don't want to be spending hundreds of pounds on trousers for but I want some decent quality and look smart. Slim fit and in multiple colours. Budget is £100 per pair.

On AAAC Peter Christian and Cordings both get good marks and are in your price range (although cordings may be starting to push it.) Unsure of the slim fit but worth a look.

I was going to try Remus Uno at first. But there are some many other suggestions now! Is Uniqlo not poor quality similar to the likes of Zara and Topman etc?

Many of these suggestions- cordings, Peter Christian, old town - will be extremely high rise. Not what I would want to wear in front of a class!

I've bought a couple pairs from Gurteen and like them a lot. Wool/poly blends that are machine washable. Just know that they do not vanity size, so a size 34 will actually have a 34" waist.

I haven't tried any of the above yet (maybe someday) except for M&S and prefer to avoid London so in no way wishing to undermine those suggestions. I have found some good M&S jackets but I tend to find M&S trousers too baggy and haven't got my head around having trousers tailored beyond taking the hem myself.

The level of formality in dress code in schools varies. A lot of secondary teachers, especially senior management (and wannabes) tend to stick to suits although they are not compulsory. I like the practicality and flexibility as well as the style of wearing a wider range of clean machine washable trousers with blazers/sports jackets and button down shirts.

Probably not up to styleforum standards so at risk of ridicule these have worked well for me.

Next are not always consistent but they sometimes have surprisingly good items at cheap prices. Often with a choice of straight/slim/skinny fittings.

Ted Baker - some of my favourite separate trousers atm but pricey. Usually slim fitting but not extreme.

I haven't tried either of the following but would be interested to hear if others have:

Charles Tyrwhitt - I really like the choice in styles and fittings in their shirts would be tempted to try their trousers when I get the chance. They also have a good delivery service.

Spoke-London . com - an interesting website that I often see advertised. I haven't tried them. Has anyone here?

Ted Baker gets a lot of stick and it is pricey but I own a few pairs of chinos and trousers that I wear to school and they're a great fit and very comfortable. I only ever buy them on sale though. My school is shirt and tie and chinos/trousers.

I have chinos but no trousers. I was looking something that I can wear on days that I maybe have meetings and make it a little more formal without over doing it. I have Goodwin smith shoes for school but on those more formal days I could wear my good Grenson or Church's shoes and some nice trousers, shirt and tie and a nice jumper.

I have had a few of J Crew's factory store trousers and chinos and they looked washed out within 6 months. I need something that will last a while. I would be looking 3 or 4 pairs of chinos and 3 or 4 pairs of trousers to keep in rotation.

I have never tried Next apart from kids clothes in the sale. There is one close buy that I can nip into and try stuff on.

I am 6ft and 90kgs so I am not skinny so it is hard to fine trousers that fit my thighs but still have a slim cut.
