What do you guys think about the following gender bending pictures. The first is from the Sartorialist and the other 2 are from the NYT. We go on here about how dress should a reflection your personality and all that.

I'm not asking if you think these guys look good, although I personality think the black guy andre j looks great. I guess what I'm getting at is do you think people like them who disregard gender can look stylish.

Men who flirt with women's fashions rarely look stylish unless it's something fairly discreet like makeup on an already androgynous individual--David Bowie--or Dior Homme-esque looks. The reverse tends to be true of women wearing men's fashion, a sort of erotic lesbianism.

gender bending in fashion is pretty much a one way street--it's more acceptable for girls to do it than guys. it's okay for women in everyday wear, but for men it's either in the realm of buffoonish drag queens or associated with androgyny, which to a lot of people comes off as affected or almost threatening.

i have a pretty masculine wardrobe, and i've been interested in trying to pull off some kind of ************* piece for a while. right now i'm thinking of getting this, and hemming it up to regular shirt length. it has a really straight silhouette, and i was thinking of getting one in mustard or orchid and layering it over a henley or thermal for warmth and then under a cardigan.

Isn't the first picture of a woman?

I think Andre J (the black bearded drag queen in the last 2 pictures) is sort of a category unto himself. If you've ever met Andre, who works at Patricia Field, you'd know that the gender-bending thing works perfectly on him because he's got the body (tall, incredibly slender) and the attitude (bitchy, fierce, cunty).

The rules for women are significantly more relaxed; so they have to make a concerted effort to look masculine or androgynous.

I remember a couple years ago men's skirts were supposed to be the next big thing. Sting wore one, and I actually think he looked all right in it. Edit: Found a picture. I guess it was supposed to be some kind of black kilt.

Gaultier and Yamamoto showed men's skirts. Gaultier even wore one I recall.
