There's also a mail in post cards inside the magazine where they'll continue your free subscription for a year. Sounds good, but I'm suspicious. There has to be a catch somewhere.

Maybe the catch is, they have to have circulation so that advertisers will buy ad space, and they can make money and eventually start charging for a magazine with a reputation, etc... gotta get the ball rolling somehow, no one's gonna pay for a subscription to a brand new unknown magazine. I'm waiting on my copy, filled the thing out a couple weeks ago.

Speaking of which, has anyone seen Vice? It's a free mag that comes out in the 'alternative' places around my area and I assume elsewhere, some ads but some good articles and stuff, glossy, full color etc. I often wondered how they could give that away.

I read Vice online. Didn't know it was given out free. It is often goodstuff, like southpark except imagine if Trey and Matt weren't from stable homes. Vice

Across the board, magazines and newspapers make their money from advertising. Subscription or newstand charges barely cover (and often fail to cover) distribution costs. Has anyone seen a September Vogue recently? It must weigh 5 pounds--try shipping over a million of those, or whatever their circ. is these days.

I second the recommendation of Vice. They even have a clothing store in NYC. How's that for a circular topic?
