I want to stay in Florence for a week from New Years Day.

Also, particularly welcome are recommendations of rooms (numbers/names) with good views.

****/€130 per night

I am recommending De la Ville (Piazza Antinori, 16)...I paid approx. 150/night...very nice spacious rooms...right in the center...there is a Brioni store few steps away. http://www.hoteldelaville.it/en/index.htm

Best hotel I stayed in was beyond the Old city gates, where green area starts. There are multiple stand alone villas surrounded by trees. Each with their own patio and garden. They were inexpensive and absolute joy to stay in as they are unique small and provide a fantastic proximity (walking distance)to the old city without being in a middle of all tourists.
Architectural details of rooms and common areas are to die for.
Sorry I do not remember the name of that hotel, but experienced travel agent can guide you there of you would be interested.
