I don't think anyone's mentioned Annie Leibovitz. Purists might find fault w/ her commercial success (and subject matter) once she joined the VF camp, but I think her earlier RS work is wonderful. Great PBS special on her earlier this month....

Bill Henson rocks, especially when you can see his prints in person. They have a real presence.

I'm aware of your fondness for off-kilter hyperbole, but what do you mean by this?

For me, I love Doisneau:

[edit]Fixed for ease of following. Sorry it seems to have trailed through... [edit] I get it. Eggleston's work is amazing. He took color photography into the realm of art. I'm a big Lee Friedlander fan. Also Walker Evans. Surprised no one here has mentioned Andreas Gursky, I'd think someone on SF would have a thing for his work. Well, I guess I'm a someone.

I think it's a very good photo, I just wonder about the word "seductive" in particular. Seductive in what sense? Sexual? I certainly think not. Perhaps seductive in that we are drawn in to wonder what is happening, so seduced by curiosity. But that wouldn't be the word I would choose, and I wonder if LK was just choosing it to be deliberately provocative.

It's seductive in that it's compelling, almost like a tiny abyss you might want to look into; it's poignant and tragic which is what makes it beautiful. It's also mildly unsettling which is also the point. It's beautiful in the way that this Diane Arbus is also beautiful:

One of my favorite part of going to galleries and exhibit openings is to roll my eyes when I over hear **** like this.

It's no Thom Browne, that's for sure.
