J and I went to a "The Duel Of Cool" Belmondo vs Mastroianni double feature of Les Doulos and 8 1/2. That was pretty cool, though sitting through 8 1/2 makes me feel completely insane.

Honestly, I don't have a "favorite actor" per se. I think what I enjoy most is not so much the craft of "acting" but of being a character. It may be the same character over and over again, in different situations - but if I like the character, I'll watch it as many times as it gets thrown out there.

I will go see damn near anything Christopher Walken is in, and I love him in King Of New York, The Dead Zone, The Deer Hunter, True Romance, Suicide Kings, Blast From The Past, Catch Me If You Can, and etc.

I have a fondness for Samuel L. Jackson movies.

Also early Harrison Ford, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Blade Runner.

Jeff Goldblum also really amuses me. Earth Girls are Easy, The Fly, ID4, Jurassic Park, Hideaway, Mister Frost, The Tall Guy, Transylvania 6-5000, and of course, Death Wish.

If you are talking about "serious" actors. I guess Gary Oldman would be my obvious choice. True Romance, Leon, Romeo is Bleeding, Batman Begins/TDK, Dracula, Sid and Nancy, Immortal Beloved, Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead, and Hannibal.

Dirk Bogarde in "The Night Porter" is perverse, fey, degenerate, dangerous, manipulative, and erotic--he looks like he is decaying on the inside. He has a certain patina.

This also applies to his role in "The Servant" which is arguably more perverse.

I enjoy film so much I'd be hard pressed to pick a favorite. I'll avoid the cliches of classic cinema that are obvious and list a few movies that come to mind, mostly from my generation. In no particular order...

Johnny Depp in Fear and Loathing.
Tom Hanks in Cast Away-not many people could pull off that movie other than him.
Another vote for De Niro in Taxi Driver/casino
Bill Murray in What About Bob
Both Steve Martin and John Candy in Planes Trains and Automobiles.

I recently saw the International, and Clive Owen continues to leave me at awe. I dont know if it is the British accent or just being a mysterious kind of actor (his roles are all a mystery). I thought his best role was in Children of men.

I also hope Terminator 4 is a wicked movie because Bale is John Conner.

He saved The Beach from being unwatchable. Catch Me If You Can was a wake-up call. The Aviator was (for me) his arrival at the top of acting. Dying to see Revolutionary Road soon. Of course all of the above is moot for someone who watched Gilbert Grape, Basketball Diaries, etc.

Actors in no particular role: Sam Jackson, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, DiCaprio. Specifically: I have a ton of respect for Casey Affleck and I thoroughly enjoyed Gone Baby Gone and Assassination of Jesse James. Surprising amount of range given his family name.

Roles: Bogart in Casablanca is one. Russel Crowe in Gladiator is another. Eastwood in the Dollars trilogy. Hanks in Philadelphia. Bill Murray in Lost In Translation.
