Hey Folks,

Here's a styling question.

Supposing you were to go to the ballet (think nutcracker @ xmas) or a symphony, or perhaps even a musical. In today's world its readily accepted you go how you want. Indeed it might even been encouraged as a way to keep those venues and concerts alive. However, that said, I have a thing for dressing up a bit for such events. The question is a do & don'ts sort.

Could you get away with brown dress shoes married to a 3 piece navy blue (solid) suit? How about oxford brogue type of shoes (not Bluchner). A wing tip oxford? or a cap toe brogue. How formal can one be?

Or is it only the standard black suit that's acceptable as evening wear?

Look forward to responses.

Thanks

A lot of it comes down to the venue for me, but I have no qualms about dressing up. Any of your suggested options would be fine, armed with the knowledge that you'll probably be better dressed than 90% of the people there, depending on location.

The mentality here is yes I do have an option to dress down, but I chose to be dressed better than the rest. I would go for a brown or tan wingtip brogue for a navy suit, a three-piece would be nice.

Save the black suit for funerals.

would french cuffs be over the top? (just curious)
I don't see why they would be???...When worn under a jacket, they are a fairly subtle point...That assumes that the sleeves of both items are the correct relative lengths and that the cuff links are not too big/loud...

Personally, I would probably go with a two piece suit and for something like a musical, I would even consider leaving the tie at home....

For a ballet or a symphony, I would check the venue as I am sure at some of the more prestigious performances, the attire can be very formal....
