Dress Pants variety or versatility?

I am thinking of a new pair of dress pants, and the decision is between a light gray pair of dress slacks or medium gray pair of slacks. I already have a pair of slacks in medium gray and I currently do not have a pair of light gray ones, considering the price is the same should I go over variety over versatility or stick to another pair of medium gray which matches essentially with everything.

Additionally any opion on Loro Piana fabrics cause the will be the fabric for my light pair of gray slacks vs zegna for my mid gray ones.

Thanks,

In my experience mid-grey goes with a lot more and is easier to match, if the colors are going to be similar then consider doing something different, like a pattern (Herringbone, Nailhead, Houndstooth, pinstripe, light windowpane, Glen Plaid, etc) so it's at least a bit different somehow.

The light grey I find is very very nice, but that's when I can actually wear it. It's much harder to match (although I think it looks better when I do actually get it), and it's inherently more limiting as it's more a spring+summer color. That could work for you as your mid-grey will be fall+winter...

So basically I'm not sure... I'd consider adding the light grey as it adds another layer of interest/style, or go with a mid-grey again but do something fun.

^^ Very good advice from M-C here. Don't double up on the same shade of colour unless there are differences in the cut and/or weave, or if you need to replace a damaged pair The light grey is a colour for brighter seasons generally, but that's not to say it's exclusive to them. They look excellent with navy, and sometime black blazers, as well as "plain" and patterened tweeds in brown, rust orange, green and other colours in that spectrum. Grey trousers always work best with a contrasting jacket, but if one is able to pair a grey odd jacket and grey trousers successfully, dpending on the setting, a high contrast shirt can look wonderful

I have a pair of light grey Loro Piana worsted flannel trousers. It's very nice and it has held up reasonably well. You can barely tell it's worsted, as you can hardly make out the twill. Even though I'm not always a fan of LP, I'd recommend this cloth (not sure if yours is the same though -- this is about 12 oz and perhaps five years old).

As for colour, light gray is very versatile and less common. Go for it.

I'd vote for variety. Why limit your options?

actually for my mid gray, I was thinking of getting exactly the same pair because I love how it looks and fits with everything, I have a bunch of tan slacks and I havnt actually seen any cream coloured trousers in the swatch books I've looked though. Does anyone have a good picture of good cream trousers? I also remembered i have a pair of light gray trousers with light blue stripes but if you compare it with pure light gray slacks i think they may be slightly different.
