Does anyone else here listen to Dr. John? IMO, he's the best New Orleans R&B/jazz/boogie woogie musician around today, and he's been going at it since the '50's. His latest album is outstanding.

He's been a headliner in every Katrina relief show/concert I've heard or seen...I remember seeing him on CNN shortly after the hurricane, and the poor guy was so devastated (who wasn't...). N.O. has been his home for a very long time.

I am a huge fan of the Doctor and of many of the related artist, from Fess and Touissant to the Nevilles.
But stylewise -

Although I consider New Orleans one of the most stylish cities in the US.

In the 60s he put out an album, Gris Gris, which was the first one on which he used his Dr John persona. It was very psychedelic mixed with N.O. spices. A classic.

Gris Gris is probably his most bizarre album. Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of it. I've been really digging his newer stuff ('95's "Afterglow" thru the present).

I'm a big fan of Dr. John, his growl and piano playing are his own.....and that's to take nothing away from Professor Longhair. Stylistically Dr. John has company, anyone here also like Willy DeVille?

Besides the good Doctor, New Orleans has produced more than one musician with loads of style:

Harry Connick Jr

and most impressively:

Wynton Marsalis (Kofi Annan looks admirably too. As always...)
