Do you care about being distinctive?

I think blending in at sf = distinctive irl. At least for those of us who don't live in fashion forward type areas.

The afflicition/ed hardy trend finally hit my city sometime around last summer and is still going strong. Wearing an oxford shirt out here is pretty much distinctive in and of itself.

I'm moseying between 'somewhat' and 'not at all'.

I mean, it's good to be unique and feel you actually look good, but I'll very rarely go out of my way to achieve an original outfit. I'd take it as more of a compliment were people to adopt a garment(s) which I'd been rocking before.

Altering one's wardrobe with the specific intention of looking different is a futile practice.

I voted "somewhat" because it's probably most describes me but there is a bit of me in each category. I don't consciously go out of my way to look distinctive but my tastes are such that just by dressing the way I like it may seem as if I do.

I like to experiment with looks and don't always need to see someone else do it first.
-don't really care or are even pleased to see people dressed similarly to you outside, even if its the same brands & the same styling you wear.
Maybe it's because I live in a an area mostly lacking in style, but when I see other well dressed people I'm usually pleased to see someone else who has put some effort into their look.

I said somewhat, but it's not hard to be distinctive in high school. Whereas I look like a bargain copy of everyone else on here, I look sooper-dooper original irl.

I take pride in what I'm wear and want to look good, I spent many a year not having a clue how to dress. There are times when I do want to look competely different when I'm out on the town however and quite often I will wear my kilt just to be different. I have gotten nothing but praise when I do wear my kilt, because it takes balls to wear into a bar or a club.

Though, on the other hand, different for the sake of being different is... nothing.

Thoughts:

I don't like that you equate distinctiveness with being ahead of the curve.

I only want my clothing to be a reflection of my tastes and personality, and to keep the bees out. Distinctiveness would be a byproduct. (I voted motorbike, sorry PP).

One more motorcycle pic to add to the mix.

There's no discussion if you phrase it any other way, at least not that I can think of.

In that case you've given trendiness a very kind name.

You certainly can be distintictive and be in the "not at all" category, at least for a period of time. The point of the thread is to speculate on how you react when you're no longer distinctive.

If that's not what you meant, I guess I don't understand what you're getting at.

Right now I'm "not at all" (althought I couldn't help but vote for motorcycle), but I think thats due to the holes in my wardrobe, and there are many of them. I kinda like a preppy workwear hybrid due to how I was brought up. I think once I have a good basic wardrobe I'll worry more about being distinctive, albiet in subtle ways.
