^ well I know thats the common view, but I really dont see the big deal. Im just used to wearing socks, and sockless feels sweaty and nasty to me.

I keep a pair of old Kudus around for washing the car/dogs/wear in Maine/whatever. The point is the waxy leather, more than the siped sole (which traps more grit than it is worth), but is soft, so it won't grind it in. But who has varnished decks anymore, anyway?

Also have a pair of 500 lb. boat shoes custom made from Russell (former field-boot maker for A&F and Orvis, back in the bad old days); great sturdy, comfortable shoes, but I fear ever falling overboard with them on (no cement required).

I sail competitively but I definately don't wear boat shoes while racing a dinghy (a function of the cold chicago water and wanting the protective height of boots for hiking).

Therefor I need to wear boat shoes at other times to compensate.

I haven't owned boat shoes since grade school circa 1980, but I've contemplated getting a pair of those Quoddy bluchers. Less boaty, more simple summer shoe. Then again, I'd almost rather get a pair of Gucci tassle loafers for the "**** you, I'm a pimp" vibe of it all. And they can probably be found cheap on ebay at that.

Just picked up a pair of Allen Edmonds Cape Cod Antelope suede Boat shoes for $100, retail @$200. They are now discontinued. Quite possible the best looking pair of boat shoes Ive seen. Super soft Antelope suede, and a natural leather welt. They look great, I dont care what anyone says.
