You waltz and foxtrot in your jacket; swing in your waistcoat. At least that's how I look at it.

I'd swing in my waistcoat, but never wear one, so I leave the jacket on. It may be less comfortable, but saves the lady and everyone else the sight of a sweaty shirt after a spirited lindy hop.

I say leave the jacket on esp. if you haven't a vest -- this whole dancing business in a white shirt is horirble looking.

Yes, leave the jacket on or you'll look like a drunkard. It's not hard to dance in a suit jacket, I managed to dance Lanciers in one.

Only for the acrobatic solo stuff though, I think. I don't recall him ever dancing in shirtsleeves with Ginger. Can't imagine it, really.
