cufflink / stud question

Just picked up this vintage set of cufflinks / studs for my tuxedo. the cufflinks are the same size as the 4 larger studs. then there are the 3 smaller studs. my question is, is that what these are...just 3 smaller studs? or is there some other use for these?

was it normal for a set to come with both 4 studs AND 3 studs? they can't be worn at the same time, right?

Correct. In the old days shirts took no more than 3 studs. Low cut vests came with removable buttons (usually 4, sometimes 3) that could be replaced with matching studs. This is a full-dress set for white tie, but can also be used for black tie. Nice set.

Vests you can find anywhere. Brooks Brothers formal vests have removable buttons. The harder thing will be finding an OTR formal shirt that only takes three studs. About your only choice these days is to go bespoke.
