Hi, id like to know what the general rule is on matching a tie knot/tie to a collar. In respect to a high / low collar or spread/semispread collar.

Thanks

"This windsor knot is perfect for a spread collar shirts or athletic collar shirts"

So do i assume - small knots = small spread - wide knots = wide spread is the general rule?

There is no necessary relationship between collar shape and tie knot.

Then you need to tie a Full Windsor with a button-down collar shirt and see what happens.

You were correct in your above post about large knots with large collars-but that is an oversimplification. A Windsor knot needs a bit of a spread to be accomodated, or else it pushes the points of the collar up and away and looks quite stupid. And when placed in a button-down collar, it is a sure sign that Johnny Does Not Know How to Dress himself.

Four in hand knots go best with point and button-down collars. And conversely, if you use a four-in hand on some widespread collars it can almost look like the knot is swimming in the collar.

There is much more information about this you can find by doing a simple search, or on the web.

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
