Cole Haan Sole Swelling

Against better judgement (I needed a pair of brown shoes pronto) I purchased a pair of Cole Haan brown loafers. I paid about $100 for them so I figured what's the worst that could happen. Well after walking for about five minutes in the rain (slight mist really) to campus, my shoes are now soaked. The shoes looked like they have absorbed the water all the way up and my soles look like they are swelling. Is this common of leather soles or just Cole Haans? Thanks for your input.

...like a sponge? I don't think shoes are supposed to do that. Also, pics for comedic value.
