Being an ex military guy we used to use cotton. First it was cotton balls, but not to long after I started using cotton diapers. They're pretty cheap, so when I run out of virgin territory I just throw it away and get a new one. Cotton diapers work real well when spit shining shoes.

I have a massive bag of cotton patches I use to clean my firearms with. I use those and throw them away after use.
