A lot of people would say M340 doesn't count because it's not a real M car. Idgaf, I just think all the new BMWs are hideous. The grills look like a Kia grill and the bodylines look like a Toyota

This is the type of affirmation I need to really entice me into getting a Bimmer.

Buying a classic car would be 100% opposite of how I view cars for actual use. I lease because I'm never out of warranty, new cars are not finicky the way classic cars can be, and I get a new ride with all the latest tech once every three years.

ok, let's entertain this for the purpose of discussion. and i am bored(drinking).

A Car that has been running like a champ for 30 years with care? will most likely still be running in another 30 years.with the same care.

Finiky is a word i use to describe new cars. the factory recalls, the faulty electronics, (yes, check lights are a thing) poor paint quality, sub par panel thickness, and the sheer number of clips!!! ****. the clips. . . .

as with all things, simplicity reigns. While complexity, the obsession of vanity in engineering, fails. rarely can any sequence become more efficient and/or reliable by adding more components.

I wonder, do you want a Douchy car? or a Mom Car?

either way, you are handing over money. a lot of money. but the dealers will still reach into your wallet. a warranty is not a walk. it's a hook.

the only warranty you need? is a good mechanic.

It's great to see you getting involved with your car.You really do have something special there.
I do the things I can do, and it's a very nice example overall.

Some good news is, that you might be able to source the parts you need from Japan. there is a healthy Euro car culture. Yes, Vaccum hoses can be a pain to get to. so can wire connectors and clutch bits. but you can do it.

I've got pretty good sources, but I'll be in Japan in a couple weeks... ;)

I tip my hat to you sir, for keeping such a rare beast in fine form. living.

Yeah, the last thing I want to have to do is worry about giving my vehicle the proper care and vetting mechanics to find a good one then spending time at that place. Stop in for 15 minutes on the way to work for service, drive off in a complimentary loaner, and later that day have the dealership park my car in my spot and pick up the loaner. That's what I want.

You might want to check with BMW on that... my boss has an M5, and the dealer here don't even give him a loaner. Don't expect much out of a pleb 3.

Maybe it's based on dealership? I get a loaner for even my oil change and I only have an M2, which I didn't even buy from the dealer. They gave me a loaner for turn signal replacement and one when I got a flag tire too.

I can’t even stand letting the dealership touch my car for service. Let them drive it? **** that ****.

A top-tier independent is preferable for non-warranty work.

But then, I guess you wouldn’t get concierge service—if that’s what’s important to you.

Leasees vs. purchasers are an interesting psychological study. I leased a car once and swore I'd never do it again; one of my best friends joked that he'd purchased once, and swore he'd never do it again (he does Lexus).

Classic cars are great for weekends, but I agree that for daily use it's not a good idea. Unless you can do a lot of the repair and maintenance yourself. For a luxury classic car, using a mech basically everything is a minimum of $700. The part can be $4.50, but labor will be $695.50. ;)
