Can this jacket be successfully altered?

Hi everyone,
I bought this jacket or Sports coat in the same size I bought my suit, but it’s a different fit so it is very wide on me. At the chest it is ok and the shoulder are only slightly too wider than my real shoulder.

I was thinking of having it altered by a tailor mostly having it fitted a waist and maybe shorten the sleeves.
First I thought I would also have the jacket shortened, but I’m afraid it will ruin the proportions of the jacket.

Do you think this jacket would be wearable with the additional work of the tailor - or should I leave it an buy something with a better fit in general?
Thanks for your opinions
Philipp

My two cents - The jacket generally fits you in all the right places. You could shorten the right sleeve slightly and take the waist in a bit and it would fit 'correctly'.

However my main issue with the jacket is not the fit but the styling. The lapels are relatively narrow and they look short, perhaps because the buttoning point is a little high and/or the jacket looks bottom-heavy. The jacket overall looks a little bottom-heavy primarily because the quarters are so closed. See how the line of the jacket edge is vertical below the button, rather than opening up. Not to say that closed quarters are 'wrong' but it's a stylistic choice that I think doesn't flatter your body in this case.

As you look at tailored clothing you should think about fit as a basic prerequisite but then also think about whether the style/cut/silhouette flatters your body.

Thank you very much for your feedback, I totally agree with you that the quarters (I had to look that term up) do not look good on this jacket. I thought, they might open up when the jacket would be fitted at the waist.
I really appreciate your advice to look at the overall style of a jacket and also pay attention to details like lapels (have to admit I haven’t given a lot of thought about lapels so far).
Thank you :)

If you take the waist in excessively then the quarters will begin to open, but then there will likely be other problems that appear such as lines of tension around the buttoning point. The line of the quarters should be determined when the jacket pattern is made, not by how tight/loose the waist is.
