Can a black velvet blazer be worn casually?

I have a banana republic monogram collection black velvet sport coat that i wore with dark jeans and a white H&M dress shirt to a job interview and was told "you look exactly like we do when we meet with clients" (I'm in SF). I think it's a good look but that particular jacket looks kinda cheap to be so expensive IMO.

black velvet blazer, white tee, dark blue jeans, simple white sneakers. The blazer you want to buy isn't better that what you'd find at Uniqlo, H&M or whoever has velvet blazers for 100$ or less.

Your age may influence the formality you prefer but it sure as hell doesn't make something less/more formal. I like the outfit though...

"Youthful" to you now is going to be "frightfully embarrassing" to you in about two years -- much less if you stick around here. That blazer is truly ugly, and you'd be much better served by something slightly plainer and nicer-looking from Zara as suggested above, if not eBay or the Buy & Sell forum where for $225 you could conceivably score a more expensive and better-constructed jacket. But if it's instant gratification you need:

He said he considers his own look a casual one. Lots of college kids still think blazers are for dressed-up occasions only; in light of the OP's question his response makes perfect sense. If you are offering the "objective viewpoint" which considers a 19-year-old and a 40-year-old to be dressed to the same degree when they're wearing the exact same outfit, fine -- but realistically and subjectively, one of them will very plausibly consider that outfit more formal than the other will.

I agree. I think part of it is also the environment and the subjectivity of one's peers.
