Buying ties on ebay

There are tons of ties on ebay. Can anyone tell me who the big/good sellers are with lots of selection? I'm looking to obtain a large amount of ties quickly and cost effectively. Thanks.

Look for new old stock ties. Used ties are usually in worse condition than they look on your computer screen. I just bought about 10 NOS ties on ebay and they came from a variety of sources...not just one or two sellers. There really is no easy answer to this question since what you want to buy is going to a function of personal taste. If you troll ebay, you may not find "large selection of ties" that appeal to you...you might only find a couple. If you want a ton of ties and just don't care what they look like go down to the local salvation army and buy ties there. im looking for inexpensive ties to start out. That seller is good, but he has mostly used ties. I'd rather buy new ones.

I found Modaitalia not to be a very good source. Even the ties that look nice in the pictures tend to be made of that very thin silk and the colors all seem darker in real life. The used part of it didn't bother me so much. Of course you can check the buying/selling forum here.

Modaitalia also takes a long time to ship. I was quite surprised to get an e-mail from them about two weeks after I'd purchased and paid for ties, advising that my order had just shipped. Having said that, though, I did get a few nice, wool ties and a fantastic, navy, cashmere tie by Etro quite cheaply from them. Turris - are you looking for a particular brand, such as Brooks Brothers, Ralph Lauren/Polo, Zegna, Charvet or another manufacturer, or do you just want a lot of any sort of ties? I have found that Polo and Brooks Brothers make excellent ties at their price points, particularly when you can usually get them NWT on eBay for $25 - $30 and sometimes for quite a bit less. In searching for BB ties, I've often seen auctions for a bundle of BB ties, although they're not necessarily NWT.

Not what you asked, but keep an eye on the sellers here at Style Forum.* There are a lot of excellent ties at very good prices here, both new and used. You're much more likely to receive what you expect, as well.

On ebay you could buy quantity and hope a percentage works out. As cvac writes, used ties rarely look new enough, and to my eye a tie that looks ragged, stained, or worn out is worse than no tie at all. Wool ties are more likely to be wearable once you get them. But I think Alan makes a good suggestion, the B&S section of the forum offers much better return on your money. You'll be better off buying one quality tie vs. buying ten "door number 2" ties.

I've only ordered once from ModaItalia and I didn't have any major problems. The three ties I got were all NOS (unused) and I paid about $12 for them all together. Since 2 of them were brands I was already familiar with there were no dissapointments in quality. The one "no name" tie I got ended up being a nice surprise with respect to the quality. I got my order in about 2 weeks and I'm in the U.S.

There are certain decent brands of ties that go on ebay, sometimes unused for not a lot of money just because their not as popular as BB or Polo. I've bought ties by Hardy Amies, Briar, Gant, Bert Pulitzer, and some private labeled men's store ties for less than $10 each, all unused. The trick is finding a design you like b/c these companies made some hideous ties as well as some nice looking ones.

What do you guys think of the vintage dior ties? The designs look quite good and I also like the narrow, but not too narrow width, but how is the construction?

Can't improve on what Journeyman posted. Big Monkey Head and Euro Silk on ebay have been reliable for me.

Modaitalia - I can't say I had problems buying from them, but the stock is definitely used. At least 1/2 of the ties I received were so perfumed, it took months of sitting in a cedar box to clear the scent. Oddly enough, prior to my last spinal surgery I was on some fairly heavy meds. Where some people get tired, I got tie obsessed. I don't even recall buying 30 ties from Modaitalia, but they showed up about 2 weeks after the surgery, leaving me with a big WTF look on my face.

Don't do this. It's a waste to buy a large amount of cheap ties. Remember, you can only wear one at a time. If you get crappy ties, you're still going to want to buy ties you like, but you're going to have a full allotment already.

Get no more than 7 or so during your buying spree, and thereafter only buy a tie if you REALLY like it.

Thanks for the great advice everybody.

I am not looking for specific brands at the moment. Just looking for nice looking ties to begin my collection, and will get into specific brands when I learn more.

I have an 36 inch chest and prefer a slim look with my clothing. should i mix and match some slimmer ties and some wider ties? im worried that i'll get ties that are too fat looking or too long. i'm 5'8".

Wow you are a really slim. I would probably stick to ties that are 2.75"-3.25" wide and no longer than 58".
