Buying a first suit... MTM or OTR?

For my $0.02 I think you have already answered your own question by stating how new you are to suits. MTM is definitely preferable to OTR if you know exactly what you need and want. Let's not forget here, gents, this guy has said this is his first suit. He has even gone so far as to admit he doesn't know what a good OTR fit feels like. All that in mind it seems like going MTM could end in disaster here.

OP: Once you get some experience in suiting and know exactly what you want, then I suggest you get in on the MTM game. Even then, most members here will tell you their first MTM or bespoke suit ended up leaving a lot to the imagination. For your first (and therefore only) suit, I suggest you not put all your eggs into one basket. Go to a great tailor, have him give you precise measurements and ask him for suggestions on suits. Then, spend under $1,000 on a suit that you will probably outgrow in a few years, and spend the other $800 on a holiday or buy something nice for your girlfriend. That will probably provide more ROI than an $1,800 suit at the age of 21.

Why is there so much crap advice on SF these days?

Look around and get an OTR which fits you well. At 21 there is no way you should be looking at MTM. It's a waste of money at this stage.

Well thanks all, clearly there is no definitive answer.
I elected to go with the MtM. I just kept getting drawn back to the feel of the fabric and it fell within the budget. I'm looking forward to it arriving in 3 weeks or so. I'll be back to share my impressions after that, and maybe you'll see me around in the meantime
