You didn't post a preference for style, size or material - which makes answering a bit difficult.

My personal preference is for leather, 2 or 3 gusset in top grain. Typically with a top flap semi-soft style.

In that family, you can spend $3k for Papworth or Swaine and get a wonderful lifetime case. Longchamp, Schlesinger, Atlas all make good mid-level cases for $500-$1000.

If you search ebay for nwt items you can find Ferragamo (so so quality), Canali (moderate quality) or hartman (so so) for under $500.

I think that's a fair description compared to SAB, Valextra, Hermès, Goyard, etc.

The last few years seem to have produced poorer grade items. Poor stitching, poor lining, ill fitted cut's, obvious defects in the leather.

I was presuming they had made a turn towards the 'lower end' and reduced their quality standards.
