I have a nice slightly-darker-than-medium brown suit, and typically I wear dark brown shoes with it. I've been of the opinion that black shoes just wouldn't look "right". Am I correct, or off base?

IMO black is OK. It is an easy solution.

    Please post pictures.

Pretty fugly in general. But particularly bad if the brown is rather dark, as the OP seems to imply.

I like the look as long as the rest of the color palatte is muted. Works best with a white shirt, IMO

I take back my NO vote. I thought it said brown shoes w/ a black suit. My new answer is yes if done right.

I have a tonal brown and charcoal striped Corneliani suit that looks better with black shoes than brown. So, I say ok!

    Depends on the suit...

Black shoes with a brown formal city-style suit (like the one in the AA picture Manton posted)=good.

Black shoes with a brown tweed country style suit =not so good.

    IMHO, of course.

    Very "farmer goes to town".

Seriously, I think the AA illustrations have answered the question.

Light brown (tan, khaki), no. Dark brown, yes. Medium brown, maybe.
