Curious about what color shirt and tie people like to wear with a black pin-striped suit. I'd prefer not to do a white shirt, but I *could* go that way pairing it with a red or blue tie and white handkerchief with accents matching the tie color.

This is for a company christmas party.

Suggestions?

I know the problem - 2 of the suits i bought in Hong Kong are black pinstripes (I wish I'd discovered this forum before) and they seem rather inflexible.

You didn't say what color the stripes are, though. My suits are one orange (quite bright) and one green (much more subdued). Short of an orange shirt, white herringbone is about the only thing I seem to be able to wear with it. All my blues have hues of purple, and pink and off-white are out too. So are most stripes.

The green stripes are a bit more forgiving, but still difficult to my mind.

My next suit is a solid

Pale pink (not salmon or darker pink) or light blue shirt with complementary tie.
I'm assuming the pinstripes are white, since you didn't specify?

The pin stripes are light gray or white.
I was thinking light blue - just have to track down a nice tie.
Thanks for the reply.

I wouldn't wear a black pinstripe suit for a Christmas party at all. It's more a work outfit IMO, and quite a formal one at that. Having said that, here are a few combinations I've used when wearing a black rope-stripe to work:

Love the tie in the second picture. Self print? I believe that tie would also be great with a mid-grey suit + white/light blue shirt. I know, I know, off the topic . . . . sorry!

^ Thanks for the tip! I struggle with that tie a bit - it's a Christian Lacroix that I bought purely because I fell in love with the design (it' a woven pattern, look almost like embroidery or a jacquard weave, rather than a print) which catches the light beautifully IMO. Depending on the angle it can seem white, silver, grey or even a very pale gold. But despite the gorgeous pattern, it's sometimes tricky to match it with suits and shirts so thank you for the suggestion.

Back on topic, today's "what are you wearing" pic has another combination for the black rope-stripe.
