Black overcoat in stead of jacket?

JamesBond08,

I think if anything it will only work if it's an overcoat that is designed to be worn without a suit jacket/blazer. Most overcoats look bad when worn over only a shirt/jumper because they are cut such that they allow enough room for a jacket/blazer, especially around the shoulders where your coat will look (and feel) wrong unless it was specifically designed accordingly.

That said, even if your specimen fits that description, I agree w/ the others who've said that keeping it on indoors will probably be frowned upon in any environment other than a teenage goth party. Same for the idea of wearing a peacoat, which, while obviously never meant to be worn over a blazer, has "outdoors" written all over it.

Thanks for your constructive comment, I have to say I mostly agree with you.
Although my overcoat fits me relatively well worn just with the shirt, I think the best option is to wear it over shirt and jumper, which I also consider as a serious option.
Secondly, it's a mixed indoor/outdoor party which will be extending out in the garden with the swimming pool, so wearing an overcoat should be acceptable.
