Black overcoat in stead of jacket for a birthday party?

Ok, I had asked the same question in "Classic Menswear" and the guys there adviced me that it was better to redirect my question here:
I have been invited at some birthday party and I was thinking what to wear. Most of the people will be aged 20-something to 30-something. And I know that the crowd will be very preppy.
I want to be original so thinking to wear black jeans (or even suit trousers), white button up dress shirt (with or without a tie) and a knee-lenght black overcoat in stead of jacket.
What do you guys think about that combo? Any experience with this?
Any advices and suggestions are more than welcome...

are you good friends with these people? if so...do what you want. they probably know you well enough to write off your "odd" fashion sense. if you are not very close with most of these people, prepare to be judged. i only say "odd" because if they are dressed in typical preppy gear, polo's and whatnot, you will stick out like a sore thumb. more important than dressing "cool" would be to dress appropriate for the event. what kind of birthday party is this? think about that too. you don't want to be rocking a tie and a long black jacket outside at a cookout.

Yes I know most of them quite well and the most important it's their kind of way too so I won't stick out... it's not actually "polo and cookout" kind of party, more wine and tapas thing. I mean you won't be judged if you show up only in jeans and t-shirts, but most of the guys there wear that kind of outfit I suggested. I already know that the majority of them will be in dress pants, shirt and sweater combos with some variations (ties, blazers, overcoats, etc...)

Ok, I've heard some critics, but is there anyone else who prefers and likes to wear that outfit as well?
