Pinhead/nailhead is a grid of little squares from what I remember. Different patterns.

Here's more on the topic

Is there any real difference between bird's eye, nail head and pick-and-pick (sharkskin)? I'm having problems telling them apart from pictures on the net.

Absolutely. They're different cloths. Birdseye=round pattern, nailhead=non-round/square pattern, pick & pick (sharskin in the US)=looks like little zig zag from up close.

Thanks. The other pics of pick-and-pick on the net that I've found don't look like that at all. That's quite evidently different than bird's eye.

Well it really doesn't look like this unless you look very close. The pattern is nowhere as discernable as birdseye for example.

Maybe someone who knows more can confirm or refute this, but I think birdseye is a basket weave (like oxford cloth), nailhead is a plain weave (like end-on-end), and sharkskin is a twill (like denim).

EDIT
Sharkskin and denim are both twills, but not the same kind of twill. Sharkskin is an even twill (both sides of the cloth look about the same) and has alternating color yarns in both warp and weft. Denim is a warp faced twill and has warp yarns all one color and weft yarns all another color.

And here I was thinking the heads of nails were round.

To me, the nailhead pattern always looked like the top of a nail sitting on its side... That's also what I see in gdl203's whnay's pic...

That flannel is not what I consider a nailhead - more like a mini graph check. Nailhead, to me, involves round (or nearly round) dots on a twill background. Lesser's 16 ounce book had two classic nailheads. Lesser's 11/12 ounce book has a very pronounced nailhead with widely-spaced spots on a black twill background.

This:

is nailhead.

Birdseye = round, larger dots on a diagonal layout.

Nailhead = squarish, smallter dots on a horizontal/vertical layout.
