Belt Shortening Question

This is going to seem like a pretty stupid question, but the other day I saw a couple of nice deeply discounted belts. The only problem most of them were much larger than my size. This got me wondering. Would it be possible to get a belt much larger than my size then get leather repair specialist to shorten it and punch new holes? Granted it won't work on belts with stitching, but for say the plain belts would this work? Or is it more trouble than it is worth.

Very doable. See your local cobbler.

The dicounted are good for testing (e.g. colour). I shortend one with a cutter and added new holes, but usually I buy them in the right size.

Why would you need new holes? You shorten the belt from the buckle...?

It's an incredibely easy and cheap fix. As people said, your cobbler will detach the buckle, shorten it, and reattach the buckle. No need to mess with the holes.

Too much work for a cheap belt ... I bought it in the wrong size and learned from it ... so the end was cutted ... nobody will notice it!

I've had it done in the stores I bought the belt.

Punching holes I've also done but it isn't as good because the punched hole may not be the same as the original holes

For some reason I thought it would be easier for a cobbler to cut and punch than the other way. But yeah I'll give it a try the next time it comes up.

Good belts have buckles screwed down to the leather and not sewn. Do it always form the buckle even if you do it yourself iut will never be visible becasue the flap of the belt coveres the point where buckle attached. Cutting and punching new holes is just plain stupid.
