I just inherited an overcoat from this maker. I have no idea how old it is. I do know that the garment is a wool/cashmere blend claims to be of English manufacture.

I'm entering a field where good quality, conservative clothes are appreciated but I'm a novice when it comes to men's fashion. What is this company's reputation?

As far as the length is concerned, how should it be? I'm a tall guy and the coat comes down past my knee but ends before mid-shin, is that correct? If it is too short, is there any possibility of it being lenghtened?

How should it fit through the shoulders?

How should the lapels look?

Basically, if I can wear the coat in a formal office environment and the sizing is appropriate, I'm going to take it to a tailor and have it tapered. If not I’ll have to purchase one – though the previous wearer was an amazing man and it would be very nice for me to be able to wear his coat.

Any advice that you knowledgeable gentlemen have to share would be appreciated.

Well. Believe it or not, that jacket was made by my father Roy T. Phythian back when he had his shop on Saville Row in London. He now mostly does consulting work in the mens fashion industry. He will get a kick out of your post. Thanks.
