In about two months I'm going to find myself in Chile for a few weeks, before shipping out to Antarctica (yeah, thats right). One of the areas I'll be in doing prep work before departing is Santiago, and I was wondering if there were any interesting stores that anyone is familiar with in the region. Also, is anyone familiar with the going exchange rate?

Since almost all my clothing is issued to me by the NSF when I arrive I have a ton of space to bring things back with me, and I'm in need of new summer clothes.

I think customs and the NSF would frown upon bringing back drugs, sadly.

I have a hard enough time bringing back geologic samples.

The latest Monocle has a (short) article on what it thinks the best part of town is for shopping/living/eating.

"Located on the eastern side of Santiago, this complex offers catwalk shows, Christmas carol concerts, and community campaigns such as the Big Smile project, which aims to collect some 2,000 presents for disadvantaged children, as well as many other events. It boasts foreign currency exchange facilities, a 10-screen cinema, and numerous big-name stores including Extreme, Umbrale, Americanino, Rusty, Maui Naútica, Sparta, Yemin Sun, Chile Tess, Arrow Soviet Reifschneider and Levi's, to name but a few. The complex also has an English-speaking staff and 6,000 parking spaces."
