Hi everyone - I did some poking around other threads for a similar topic and did not find one. Here goes:
I bought a Banana Republic suit jacket about 12-14 months ago. I know, lecture me on making that mistake. It was from the heritage line, though. 100% wool. Not a bargain basement model. I wear it once a week on average, and once in a while even twice a week.
A month ago I noticed a section on the left shoulder that is best described as discoloration. To the eye it looks like a dull and slightly faded section of cloth. I believe it's the result of the strap of my messenger bag that I carry over the shoulder rubbing the fabric.
It also has the appearance of adhesive having rubbed off on the material, even though the area is not sticky/tacky. Here is what I have tried so far in treating the area, all unsuccessfully:
- Woolite
- White Vinegar
- Clear tape trick
- Ice cube trick
Nothing worsened the condition of the wool, but nothing got rid of the issue either. When treating the area with a suit brush I took a much closer look and had a second thought: Could the rubbing of the strap on the suit fibers have thinned the material, and the white residue I am seeing (stuff I said looks like adhesive) is in fact the white fibers under the shell? The wool is neither stretched nor torn. Due to its dark navy color I cannot tell much more than that.
Anybody else ever run into a similar issue or know how to remedy? Or am I hosed, plain and simple?
I'll try and upload a pic in case the description of the issue isn't clear.
