too much grey violates the so called "matchy-Matchy rule" as does a white p.s,with a white shirt.  well, if such a thing existed.

Incorrect with respect to a white pocket square and white shirt. This is a classic combination and has been worn by some of the best dressed men in the world for decades.

What on earth is happening to this forum? Pin-dot socks are a classic formal choice and not the least bit foppish.

As has been mentioned, you should probably be wearing black shoes to a wedding though.

+1. Subtle patterns on conservative colors have never been foppish IMO.

+2. If we're talking about wearing bright polka dot socks to a wedding i would advise against that, but a subtle pin dot on a conservative background is absolutely fine.

What about the fact that it's a light grey suit in the middle of winter? As far as I understand, light grey is meant more for warm weather. Are weddings an exception to this rule?

I generally do wear lighter suits in the summer and darker suits in the winter (though a light grey flannel suit does tempt me). For a wedding, I would generally wear something darker in any season (unless it was a less formal daytime wedding during the summer).

That said, in the grand scheme of things, there are worse faux pas than wearing a light grey suit to a wedding in the winter if it's accompanied by a white shirt and otherwise conservative choices.
