Always wear a tie when looking for work

Yesterday I was dropping off a resume at a consulting firm I'm trying to get a job at. When I walked into the reception area there was a man who clearly worked there speaking with the receptionist. While I was waiting for him to finish I noticed that he was carrying an envelope with the name of my potential manager's manager. Figuring I had nothing to lose I asked if he was the senior manager for marketing, turns out I was right. We had a chat about what they were looking for in the candidate and I got to sell him on why I am the best person for the position. I handed him resumes addressed to him and his collegues.

Point of the story, before I left for the office I debated wearing a tie and jacket because I was "just dropping of a resume."

You don't say exactly what you were wearing. Of course, I assume that you were wearing a tie, and hopefully suit!

No matter what the senior manager was wearing (you don't say), it would have been advantageous for you to be well dressed.

I don't care what the "Culture" of that company was(and do I hate that PC term!), you showed seriousness and respect by appearing well dressed. And he will remember that.

Thanks for the encouragement guys. The job is a great fit for me and the organization (as I see it). The only challenge right now is I'm coming into the hiring process late, they are already looking at another candidate. I'm first alternate. Right now I'm trying as best as I can to stay in the minds of the three managers who are decision makers on the hire.

I didn't want to mention what I was wearing for fear of being crass, then I remembered where I was. The Outfit that day:
-Dark Brown J Crew cords that have been slimmed.
-Navy Blue Hugo Boss ski sweater
-White/Brown/Baby blue check button-down bought in Rome, slimmed down
-Gold/Brown/Navy large checkered Jack Victor tie
-Navy Marc Jacobs blazer
-Chocolate brown Koil chelsea boots.

He was dressed in a pair of fairly full cut pleated olive trousers, off-white billowy shirt, yellow tie, brown loafers. Pretty average look for an upper end executive.

I really want to see more brown corduroy worn these days. Good job on the outfit, though I'm skeptical about the tie.

Sounds like quite a casual outfit to me. I don`t see how the tie would make a difference in the outfit you described.

On the plus side, I think you got a lot of extra points for showing your enthusiasm for the job directly to the managers. Good luck!

The outfit was on the casual end of things, I did have two other meetings that day with guys in jeans and tees. I'm also 22, and the position involves a lot of informal meetings and events so I figured it was appropriate.
