O.K., I just bought a set of Rimowa luggage - the Rimowa Limbo Multiwheeled Upright...I wanted to purchase a hard case for travel to protect my sartorial investments. Have I drunk to much Guinness or am I on track? I do admit there could be middle ground here but I need a sanity check - I have spent far to much money on my shoes and clothes to use the flimsy luggage I have...

I am curious how much stronger/more reliable the Rimowa is compared to the slightly used poly samsonite shell rollers I find at resale shops.

What I would be more concerned with is actually getting the luggage back when to arrive at you destination. To guarntee you'll get you bag I recommend this little tip of putting a firearm in your bag (declare it of course). You can even put in a starter pistol if you don't want to carry a real gun. If you do this your bag will be hand carried and tracked at all stops. It's the only sure-fire way to protect your bag (pun very much intended).

And it might even protect your nice clothes from thieves.

I flew 100K a year for 15+ years. I always avoided obvious name brand luggage to prevent theft and went for basic balistic nylon in black. Boring, but I have never lost a bag. I bought Briggs & Riley because it was well made and has a 100% guarantee for repairs. They have been amazing, fixing any repair free of charge including airline damage and frayed zippers.

Now for a roll-on/carry-on for the cabin, I wouldn't have the same concerns. A small Rimowa would look great.
