Very true. However, considering the speed with which so many forumites (including me) have received replies, the indication is they probably aren't getting tons of such requests. Because of this, they probably view the tiny amount of money going to these non-revenue-generating services as good public relations, and I'd be willing to bet a six-pack they're right. Among AE fans, they DO have a great reputation for customer service and being customer-friendly (which is not always the case with some other companies, such as Alden).

My sentiments exactly. Whenever I've called them with a weird question that only a member of this forum would ask, they've been very friendly and helpful. I have nothing but good things to say about AE all around, from the quality of their product to the quality of their customer service.

Ditto, no attitude with AE. Iknow JL is the pinnacle of fine shoes, but from my experience, their reception to potential customers off the street is how shall we say...chilly.

FYI - I checked last night and the Ashlands are on the 4 last.

I would agree that the willingness to answer a few questions from your customers is really just good customer service and something that most companies should be willing to do.

Sorry for reviving this thread. I just bought the Colton in chestnut and found that the 0 last fits my foot pretty much perfectly. I'm trying to find out some more information about the last, but I think it has been removed from the Allen-Edmonds last guide.

I'm now on the lookout for a Birmingham, but what I'd really like is a brown plaintoe blucher (Harrison or the Leeds) and I'm wondering which one would be a better fit for me.

The Harrison is/was on the 0 last, so you would probably like it. I bought a pair late last spring. It was at the deep closeout price of $129, so I don't know whether there are any more in inventory or not. If so, it will cost you a LOT less than the Leeds. I think you can order a second in cordovan in the Leeds from one of the outlets for the semi-annual sale, and it will run you about $280, which is a lot more than you'll pay for a Harrison. However, it is a shell cordovan.

Well done getting a pair of McAllisters that fit you. They may be my favourite AE shoe, and I persistently scour ebay for another pair of 11.5Es to snap up.

I see AE now allows you to look up shoes by last number on their website...for current line shoes anyway. Also it looks like they updated there last description page with information on the zero last.
