It's a question of proportions IMO. I can understand a 3" tie on a 38" chest guy, but I think it looks silly on a 44" guy. Conversely, a 4" tie looks silly on a skinny guy.

I'm a size 36"-38" chest guy, and I wear 3.5- 3.75 width ties. It's really preference. I dont think it looks ridiculous. It really depends on the lapel width of my jackets.

Yes - she means con orlo - untipped, like in my photographs.
