Hi,
I have the opportunity living in Shanghai to make a custom designed suit with 2 ply wool for a great price. I'm not expecting a perfectly made suit the first time around, nor am I expecting great quality, but for the price, I have an opportunity to be creative and run through a few designs before i get it right.

I am imaging high collars and three piece suits. Its for walking around town, and business negotiations. I don't need a tie and tie's are unusual here in china.

What suggestions do you have? What colors, types of collars, types of lapels, any suggestions at all are welcomed.

I'm new to suit making. I'm 5'11 175 pounds decent build with good shoulders.

Suits are meant to be worn with ties, especially if you are wanting shirts with higher collars. And especially especially with a vest.

If you are set on no tie, look for casual fabrics, lose the vest, and explore button down collars. Notch lapel on the jacket. No stripes.

I'm surprised tieless is the norm in Shanghai. Here, more men are with than without

Could the same not be said about a waistcoat? Or is the Tom Ford look very popular in the Chinese business world?

If you want go tie-less then wear a two-piece suit. I remember starting a new job about six years ago, I wore a tie Mon-Thurs and went tie-less on Friday; and on the Friday I was told not to wear a tie from now on. Two-piece suit with no tie, is very common in London.

It could work with a casual cloth; however, not sure if a casual cloth would be suited for business.

The country is still 'rough', so to speak. Ties are used in some offices, but real business is done outside the office, at dinners, simple meetings , etc.
I'm trying to upgrade my style level, but I find I look good in a three piece, and its warmer. Plus, I can always ditch the vest depending on the occasion.

I would go to a tailor rather than do it yourself, more likely to be successful. Research here on which tailors are better.

I am going to a tailor, but not a high end one. I want to choose some looks first before i spend 800-1000$ on a suit. So i'm trying to get some pointers.

Price is 170 dollars for a 3 piece suit, 2 ply wool. I choose the cut style etc. At that price point I can have a few made, and after getting it right,, go to a high end tailor.

Thanks

You would be better to forget that idea and simply go to a decent tailor.

Fabric market in shanghai. Its a hit or miss place, but I'd rather experiment for 170 dollars, understand what works , get the right fit down, and then later upgrade in quality. After all, as I have been reading fit is number 1. And on this forum i've seen some expensive suits that don't fit right, but have great quality. And I'd like to have 3 or 4 suits made, that way I can rotate them on a daily basis. I can afford that @ 170. And if it doesn't work out on the first one, i can improve to the second one.

if you are going to the fabric market, then $170 is too much. the last time i got a 3 piece made there i paid around 650-700RMB. Of course that was for a wool/poly blend, I also wouldn’t trust what they say about the fabrics, only trust what you know. do make sure you know exactly what you want and convey it, as they will not really give any suggestions and anything you don’t mention they will just go with their default.
