I understand that Polyester is less "breathable" than cotton, but other than that, are there any significant differences?

Are suits made from 100% polyester considered cheap and/or tacky?

Also, would wearing a 100% polyester suit in an office environment be acceptable or unprofessional?

First question, NO.

Second question, NO.

Third question, Yes, acceptable.

I would be more worried about looking/feeling way overheated in a poly suit. They are WARM, speaking from adolescence of thrifted leisure-suits.

A knew a person who was well off financially but invested little in suits. He purchased polyester suits over wool because they cost less...and kept them for decades even though they were old and beaten. Like a vast majority of the unwashed masses, he kept company with persons who wore the same stuff, and could not tell the difference between a wool and polyester suit

From a distance, his brown suit looked great. Upon further closer inspection, you notice how poorly it looked and how cheap was its construction. But this man was in a good physical shape, handsome and tall. The suit fit fairly well and thus to the unwashed masses, easily passed as a good suit

Therefore, if you are a bargain hunter, cheapskate, or want to spend as little as possible, then try a polyester suit. Few people will notice the difference...or even care if they do...at least here in Parts Unknown

As to wearing it to work...most offices, any suit except seersucker or linen will pass as a NICE suit

If possible, don't lower youself to getting a polyester suit...the infinite wisdom of those who frequent this forum will suggest you try an all wool suit to best satisfy your demands.

You know those little baggies of frozen vegetables that you pull out of the freezer and microwave, and they steam inside the bag?

A polyester suit is like that bag.

I'm not a fan of them either, but it should be noted that there are some rather expensive poly suits from some of the, ahem, "high-end" fashion

+1. I'd also note that many suits advertised as "pure wool" are actually a wool/poly blend. Same goes for linen, for that matter. Pays to check the label.

+100 on the remark that wearing a poly suit is basically boiling in a bag.

Not a material to make a sut from - looks cheap and a bin liner wouldbe cooler.

Exactly. Many an Armani suit has some form of poly in it.

A 50% polyester / 50% renewable bamboo fiber fabric suit would be perfect for infuriating all political beliefs at a cocktail party.
