All the Montreal threads seem old so I'm starting a new one. Will be in Montreal for about 4 days in June. Any recommendations for neighborhoods and specific bars, clubs and restaurants to check out? I sniffed out some cool spots the last time I was there (2007) but would welcome recommendations from residents or folks that have been lately.

I was there a couple of weeks ago and ate very well at: Joe Beef; Au Pied de Cochon; Europea; Club Chasse et Peche; Garde Manger; and, Liverpool House.

Joe Beef was the most fun, had the best food and best wine list in my opinion. Au Pied de Cochon pretty much requires coronary bypass surgery following the meal - if you go you probably want to skip lunch that day.

I liked Pied du Cochon the most and want to go back. Schwartz and Europea were ok but not worth returning.

Looking forward to hearing your report when you return; have been planning on driving up to Montreal (have never been) in August.

Same. I have plans to check it out in September or early October.

My sister has gone there a few times but she can never remember the names of the particular bars or restaurants she went to and enjoyed...

I had a wonderful time courtesy of a few lovely ladies at Kamasutra. It's conveniently located just off of St. Laurent which has an abundance of nightlife.

Hey, is that like a bar where you drink your beer very slowly and methodically while sitting in funny positions or... oh, I get it.

You have to go to Schwartz Deli. Its the best smoked meat on earth.

No it's not.. not by a long shot. In fact, the Main deli directly across the street is much better. Not to say Schwartz is bad, but it's an institution and a tourist destination, nothing more.

I've heard great things about Joe Beef.

Thanks for the suggestions. We didn't make it to any of the above.

Friday night we bar hopped on Saint Laurent. Started at Go Go Lounge which wasn't anything to write home about but my friend managed to make a girl fall in love with him within 5 minutes of walking in there. On our drive back to DC she was emailing him trying to convince him to stay with her on his next trip up there (which would be next June - not that she knows that). Anyway, as it was pouring we stumbled into a few more night clubs but I would have to dig around for their names. The women were not as pretty as I remembered (from six years ago), but they were fun.

Saturday we started late with dinner at L'Express which had a great French Bistro feel to it. The food and presentation were great (the marrow in my beef stew gave me the runs though), and we ordered a great bottle of wine. We then decided to skip on the clubs and try some laid back bars. Bily Kuhn was too crowded (bar too small to stand at and no seats were available) so we walked across the street at hung out for a while at Plan B (a very cool, small lounge/bar. Really dug the laid back music from the DJ and it wasn't slammed though it had a decent crowd. We ended the night at Big in Japan, which blew my friends breath away (I had read and seen pictures about it so knew what to expect). I had a great martini (I found that the bartender wouldn't make my martini wet amusing) and we people watched for 30 minutes or so and then cabbed back to the apartment we rented.

Sunday we intended to go out for a couple of hours to a bar like Le Distillerie but I ended up passing out at like 8pm thanks to 6 hours on my feet at the Grand Prix.

Given the exchange rates I wasn't surprised beer and cocktail prices were largely similar to those in the DC. (~7 a beer, ~10-16 for cocktails depending on the place), but was pleasantly surprised to see shots were cheap at $3-4 (instead of $8+ in DC)
