Cognitive Dissonance:
"I love my classic vintage Harris Tweed"
vs.
"Jackets with a low gorge are embarrassingly outdated"


As fall fashion season approaches (and yes, fashion) all minds turn to the "eternal timeless gentleman" classic look of tweed. Yet, no one here would DARE wear a 1980s "Miami Vice" era jacket lest someone post a picture of Gekko holding a giant cellular telephone. So, the subject speaks for itself. How do you personally reconcile this, with regards to tweed jackets? I have a vintage tweed jacket, but noticed its low gorge. If it were a navy suit, it would get laughed off the forum. Is tweed the same, or does it get a pass? Or, is it just subject to transient fashion whims (planned obsolescence), like everything else except shoes.

I suppose 'gorge geeks' are rather like sneaker heads. Something a select few SF'ers may notice, but the the vast majority of people in the real world will not notice or even care. OMG your gorge is so 1986!!!.

I actually see the OP's point. I think hairy harris-type tweeds sometimes look better when they're slouchy (low gorge, wider lapels, longer length, soft tailored etc) - whereas hard-finished Huntsman style FU tweeds can be better in a sporty configuration (slimmer, structured, maybe hacking + ticket pockets).

Just a minute friends. There is a legitamite question here.
Whatever sins the OP may have commited in the past, I see no need for immediate ridicule where there is an acceptable question at hand
I haven't seen anyone yet try to answer the question, perhaps because it was buried in fluff. May we do so now?

The issue should not be low gorge of itself, but rather what compliments a mans body proportions. An old vintage tweed jacket with a low gorge can easily be remedied by adding another button or wearing with a scarf. Vintage Harris Tweed sport coats can be rather boxy on top of it all and probably better suited for wearing with beefy sweaters.

Reevolving, I have read now many of your threads. You have even raised some interesting topics along the way. Please recognize that less fluffy writing will vastly improve your threads and posts. If no one has told you this before, then it falls upon me to do so now. You are not William Shakespeare; not in a past life, not now, never will be. You simply haven't the flair for it. Easy answer: not all vintage tweeds have low gorges. There are plenty of obviously dated tweeds, but there are many that have a more moderated style and wouldn't stand out at most any point in recent history.

I assume that you mean the placement of the notch when you say gorge.

The gorge on one of my vintage Harris Tweeds (aka, thrifted for cheap) surprisingly isn't laughably low. There is another one I picked up for this fall and it does seem to have a dated look. But I don't care. I figure if you are young and wearing tweed, no one is going to laugh at you because of the dated look of the gorge (which, of course 99 percent of the male population wouldn't know what this means); they will just either ignore you or laugh at you for "trying to be that guy."

On a tangential point, did anyone know that Brooks Brothers is using Harris Tweed again? Picked up a jacket today with some Harris fabric.
