I know these are both very basic and easy to match, but I was just wondering which one people wear more often? Or which one goes better with dark brown shoes?

Medium grey is much more versatile than charcoal, which will always tend to look like orphaned suit pants.
Charcoal is a terrible odd pants color. I cannot vote for that.

None of either. One is a personal opinion on a particular trousers color, while the other one is presented as the word of God who descended upon us to impart that rule. The particular vs the general. Individual vs groupthink. Freedom vs communism...
