Can you put a vent in a ventless jacket?

I really enjoyed this suit at Neiman Marcus...the coat did not have a vent. I have never owned a ventless suitcoat before, so I asked him if I could add the vent. He said yes...I took it to my tailor...he said absolutely not. So I ask you...can I add a single center vent to a ventless coat?

Your tailor is correct. The salesman, as usual, was telling you what you wanted to hear to make the sale.

this is just due to how the jacket is constructed. it's not feasible to do this and will end up looking silly if you try.

Yes...I understand that it can not be done. I chose not to have it tailored at the moment. I still like the suit...I was just asking if there is a general consensus on a non-vented coat, or if the vents are just a personal preference (no vent, single, double...)

Preference. But double vents are the best.

I would imagine that if the jacket is too big for you, the jacket could be altered and the back re-cut with a center vent (you need that extra material for the vent). If the jacket fits well, then it cannot be done

Personal preference, but it also has to do with how your ass is shaped and stuff. Also on how often you tend to put your hands in your pockets.

Hello, just got a nice double breasted jacket as a gift, however it dosent have a vent. The jacket is in fact one size larger than what I tend to wear so there is excess fabric to work with. Could a single vent be added? In any case does a ventless jacket produce too many wrinkles when you sit or is the effect negligible?

How many necro threads do you need to dig up? Do not try to add vents to a ventless jacket. Unless you have more money than sense.

The short answer is no, you probably can't put a vent into a ventless jacket.

The long answer is that it depends. In order to put in a vent, there needs to be extra fabric somewhere in the jacket. A vent isn't just a slice into the fabric, it's a design where there's a bit of overlap between the two pieces. In very rare instances, sometimes there may be enough fabric somewhere in the jacket, say in the side seams, on a bespoke garment. But it's never there in ready-to-wear because manufacturers try to save as much cost as possible, so the amount of extra fabric they give you inside is very little.

I often purchase center vent jackets and convert them to ventless (I do my own alterations). Doing the reverse is not possible. It requires about an additional 4x12 inch piece of fabric per vent that is simply not there in a ventless jacket.
