The State of Black Tie: Your Observations

I'm not sure I quite understand. The 280 gsm “lightweight” barathea is a different fabric from the 400 gsm barathea. Both are quoted in gsm, not linear metres.

The State of Black Tie: Your Observations

Does anyone have any experience with Hainsworth’s black dress barathea for a dinner jacket (or I suppose formal dress in general)? It is lighter weight (280 gsm) than their ordinary barathea (400 gsm) and might be cooler.

    Pictures of nice gloves...?

A bit late, but yes, they are. Very quick to reply.

Have you ever encountered white flakes on a lining?

I have no idea what these “flakes” you are talking about look like. Could you provide a photograph?

    Old School Shirt Collars

I don't think that's entirely right, at least not for modern starched collars as worn by priests and lawyers. Starched collars are stiff, not because of their fabric, but because of the starch which goes into it. When they are freshly laundered and unstarched, they are flimsy (well, as flimsy...

    Old School Shirt Collars

Yes, I wouldn't wear a wing collar as a barrister loosely—it looks pretty sloppy. Although a lot of barristers (and judges!) wear fake wing collars which look really sad, like floppy polyester things. I could probably fit in a few fingers though in the collar. I've never understood if “one...

    Old School Shirt Collars

I assume this is a joke. Very droll, if so. Maybe he should've tried some starched bands as well, like Vergilius Ferm here.

Ask for some comments of my combination

It doesn't look terrible. I think your trousers are a bit short in the rise though, as well as your sleeves. The length of the jacket seems a tad short too. That is modern fashion, I suppose. I feel the jetted pockets, fabric and the brown buttons don't really match each other either, especially...

    Old School Shirt Collars

When you say “super stiff” how stiff do you mean? You're not going to find anything as stiff as starched collars. Higher collars are available, but they're not as high as the extremes in the Edwardian period (like what Karl Lagerfeld wore).

Australian Members - Part II - if you read the first post, you'll get what this is all about.

What's so bad about Myer? Sure, their ties are all nasty embroidered stuff and their socks as short as possible (seriously—does no one wear normal-length socks anymore apart from schoolboys and girls?) but they are all right for casual wear.

Very nice. Is the cooking done before or after dressing? Or is there no cooking involved?

    Rotated or offset sleeve placket

I have found that when writing or at the computer, double cuffs often get in the way underneath the hand. I was reading an old 1900s book which suggests having shirts made with the placket rotated (presumably to the crease line?), with a note that 'Mr. Lewin' makes all of his shirts like this...

Design of the back of the jacket

It looks like the back of a frock coat or tailed evening coat. Modern military tunics also seem like they can have that design.

Cost of Quality Men's Shoes through the Decades?

RM Williams have increased around four-fold since the start of the 2000s I am guessing. Maybe threefold.
