I have never liked the look or feel of a three-piece suit with the jacket buttoned.

Unbuttoned when standing up? Sure, if the jacket doesn't fit, why bother? But if it fits great it would be a shame not to show it.

I.e, unbuttoned standing up is for those whose jackets don't fit, or those who don't have the minerals to look their best.

I only have 2 button suits. Tend to wear it buttoned up on the way into and out of work (save for when on the Tube and stretching one arm horizontally/vertically to grab a railing).

When in the office (where not everyone wears a tie these days), it's off 90% of the time but when worn, I often have it deliberately unbuttoned as it seems ever slightly too stiff/formal in that setting when done up.

In an interview, Tom Ford said he goes around at parties and buttons guys jackets, because, buttoning the jacket is the easiest way for a man to look good and trim.

I remember reading this too. If I ever meet him I may feel forced to reciprocate and button up a few of his shirt buttons.
