Are you suggesting this is bad? I like it; and, as if you couldn't guess that I'd have an example at hand, it's straight out of AA/Esky around the same time:
gMdit.jpg

The original caption for this:

"The big idea this year, if you want to be well dressed for the southern resort season, seems to be that of carefully conveying the impression that you don't give a damn how you look. The French have a word for it: dégagé, and indeed it is a prevailing characteristic of Riveria fashions. Here the impression is fostered by the roll of the lapel to the bottom button of the double-breasted light tan gabardine suit, by the open-throated Burgundy colored polo shirt of silk and wool, and inherent informality of a porkpie hat of lightweight felt. Other details worthy of notice are the eight-inch side vents at the back of the jacket, the brown buckskin shoes with leather soles and heels that are varnished black and the red carnation that gives the lie to the studied carelessness of the whole effect. You can wear a colored silk handkerchief around the neck, if you like."

And, I'm sure o/o would. And has.

But shouldn't this just serve as further evidence that AA illustrations should not be taken as unbreakable gospel? They are great because they keep alive ideas that were tossed around when our manner of dressing was more popular, but they weren't infallible then and should not be considered so now.

Weird. Suede with gabardine.

Dressing for TV has its own requirements, like:
"If you are a man with even an inch of fat on your waist or are wearing a suit that isn’t 100% perfectly tailored, then keep your jacket buttoned.
This will keep your tie in place, your suit symmetrical, minimize your gut and show less of your light colored shirt."
As stated here
Has this been updated for HDTV? I'm guessing not given the use of the word "videotape", which invalidates virtually all the advice on color or pattern choices. Whites do not glow in HD, colors do not bleed in HD, and black does not suck up all the light in HD unless the set is poorly lit. Patterns are fine in moderation, aside from one: houndstooth or anything similarly high contrast but intricate. The HD feed will be somewhat compressed and, when you move, it will look like your jacket has been sprinkled with tinsel or glitter.

Is it true that small patterns on a necktie- like houndstooth - create problems for camera auto-focusing? (in studio)

They seem to be balanced out nicely with his dark tie and dark brown hat. But as mentioned above, some of this may have to do with Schumann adjusting the contrast before posting.

Saturarion especially, I think:

Edit: what Foo said.

Not the ideal in my opinion, but only a small sin. Anyway, I think they may be more of a medium gray, and the photographer has simply boosted the contrast and saturation of the photo.

For me, there are two.
1) Fred Astaire pinning a button down collar

I was searching for an answer after reading the thread title, but before an answer came up, I saw Fred Astaire's pic and remembered it... and yes - this is def. a contender for it...

This photographer is clearly in violation of Flusser's "Brando" contract clause.

He isn't comfortable with the camera. With these street shots our relation to the camera has a huge impact on the result. The clothing is less important than we think for the succes of a dress. Try comparing Flusser with Nick Wooster: http://www.the-journal-of-style.com/2012/06/28/sports-jacket-shorts/.

That said I think the derision of Flusser at SF and LL is way too harsh, however predictable:)

All right, then--I'm mentally editing the picture so that Flusser is willingly and cheerfully facing the camera, putting forth an unforced air of ease and confidence. He looks a lot happier now. I'm happy for him. Unfortunately, the outfit still looks like crap.
