Dear Fellows,

Where should the waistband on a pair of dress trousers lay in relation to the body?

I tend to favor having them at or just above my umbilicus, generally known as the "natural waist."

I have a long torso, short legs. I am 6 feet tall with a 30.25 inch inseam. I find that having the trousers at or just above my umbilicus makes my legs appear longer and torso shorter.

I always wear my pleated trousers this way. At times, I wonder whether I should wear my unpleated trousers in this fashion as they do not drape as nicely, however the leg lengthening effect usually convinces me to wear them high.

I also wonder whether it is ever optimal to wear dress trousers at the hips as opposed to natural waist? I think jeans and chinos are best suited for this.

Regards.

I suggest wearing them at your natural waist, if they are cut for such wearing.  A pleated trouser esp. looks elegant in this manner.  And this hip trouser fashion is rather vulgar, I think.  Only Levi 501's should be worn low.  Keep up the tradition.

I think it completely depends on your build. I happen to have a rather long torso compared to my leg length and am rather broad through the shoulders and hips. I am 5'11" but only use a 30 inch inseam even on pants about an inch above my hipbones. I would look like an oompaloompa with my waistband pulled up that high.

my rule of thumb is waist band should come just underneath or half way of belly button.
