Over the last few years I have been recovering and now have more or less recovered from a bout of serious depression. Interestingly, the odd occasion that I feel low/depressed now is after two or more consecutive nights where I don't get enough rest. This does not worry me because I am still coming off my anti-depressants, and have not yet made a 100% recovery.
In my opinion it sounds like your body is very sensitive to the quantity and quality of sleep you get - to an unusual degree perhaps. If it worries you and your doctor recommends a low dose of anti-depressants for a while I think it might be a good option. They are not addictive, the majority of people do not experience bad or long-term side-effects, and they may just help boost levels of chemicals in your brain, allowing your body to learn to cope with not always getting 'enough' rest.
Just a thought anyway - it is certainly an area which is very subjective - and different solutions work for different people!
