Strange, I thought formal trousers should have forward pleats. So how can flat fronts be formal?
Very true but this only applies to formal dress ie white tie. The more traditonal term to describe black tie is "informal dinner clothes" ie black tie is not formal dress.
Just something I noticed about this particular outfit; I thought formal pants should be flat front and not double pleated?!

My understanding is that they may be flat-front or pleated. I had mine made flat-front, since that fits in with the idea of fewer details (everything is simpler). In any event, they are to be without cuffs.

Flat fronts also antedate pleats.
