Thoughts of ensemble for evening banquet

My non-prof is hosting an annual banquet. The venue is indoors. Would it be appropriate to wear a light earthy grey colored suit (3 rolls 2). Shirt is a white plaid (light lavender and light blue pattern). Was thinking about a solid blue or solid lavender tie. Thoughts? Suggestions? Maybe throw in a pocket square??

Oh and dark brown oxfords.

Thanks!

What does the invitation say?

A "banquet" suggests evening dress at the least. If it is informal given that in a university context, chinos may be formal) then a dark suit would be preferable if the event has some sort of stature.

It would be completely irresponsible of me to recommend wearing black tie with a dark green velvet smoking jacket instead of the tux coat, so I will not.

Ir's an annual dinner for a non-prof...The status quo has been suit attire, but most of them are fused and nowhere near the quality and complexion of my Caruso Sartoria Parma summer suit, a perfect fit for the late night Miami heat. No pun intended...

If the standard is a suit, I see no reason why a nice suit wouldn't be appropriate.

Light colors are much more acceptable than many people seem to fear, especially in the summer.

As for other thoughts, consider making the tie a knit if you have one or can get one easily. And certainly wear a pocket square. White cotton or linen always looks nice. Something else if you have it, and coordinate properly. Pull the lavender out of the shirt if you wear the blue tie, plain white if you go with the lavender tie (which I would avoid with lavender checks- need some color variation).

How about I pull the blue out of the shirt with a lavender tie? I can go with either, though. White pocket square?
