Random factoid that connects both these things while being completely unrelated-a bit like how the long beach state teams are the 49ers but the reference is 1949
The first gold rush in America was in North Carolina, just outside Charlotte. When the University of North Carolina at Charlotte was looking for a mascot, it decided to highlight this heritage and went with a miner. "But 609," you're thinking, "aren't they called the 49ers?" Why yes, they are indeed. And that's because the university was chartered in 1949, which the university also wished to commemorate. Now, a cynic might say that this was a ploy to use higher profile historical references to raise awareness of a university struggling to get recognition in a state with multiple better known schools. But a true UNCC 49er would simply tell such a person, "Kiss my axe!"
